Brandon Davis: push pull cable deals with a lot of gear and extreme conditions, especially from belt maintenance to brakes to handlebars and more. It changes when every race is soft in the mud or sand.
Mike Berry: In heavy washing and muddy conditions, keeping the cable exposed is important for proper replacement. Entrances and exits are important for cleanliness and litter-free.
End cap fixed. This is the most common way to finish the ropes after trimming them to size. This requires a hand and an end cap. They are made of different metals, in different colors and in two sizes, one for the brake cables and the other for the adjustable cables. Not everyone likes the look of the end cover. If they are not properly prevented, they can appear. And if they come out, the cable is usually bad because removing the cap damages the cable. As part of ClassicRendezvous
, Richard Sachs reminded everyone that he has a Campagnolo #652 rear end, which he uses a lot. CRer Brooks Watts says the Campy hat first appeared in their book in 1953!
Electricity reduces heat. All it takes is hot tubing and a light. Reader "Merle" said that after installing the heatsink pipe, cutting the pipe lengthwise gives a nice clean cut. Some tubes are different colors to match the bike. I don't know how long it will last.
I use GORE shifters and gear brakes before they stop, but I don't ask for a closed system, probably because of our climate and their cost. I would never use a house like NOKON for cyclocross. Installing and maintaining a bike is very difficult.
CXM: During cyclocross, how often do you change the chain and how often do you change the housing, how often do you change both? Does it do everything it wants to do, A and B at the same time, or is it more of a starter than a bike?
BD: push pull outer casing are always replaced on A and B machines. We run two bikes for the same amount of money making repairs at the same time, but in the end the situation tells more often than not. Still, everything is new at the big races like Worlds, Pan-Ams, and Nationals. Generally, if we're going to replace the cable, we're going to replace the house at the same time. A great rule of thumb for people is that if you're doing a new bar tape, do the wiring.
MB: For the bike, we replace the belt as necessary and check the contamination of the housing. On the Cannondale SuperX, the housing stays behind the derailleur all the way from the shifter to the head tube, up the top tube, and down and out of the seat. Because of the complete houses, we do not need to replace the entire length of the house, because most of the cables continue to harm only one entry and exit. Sometimes, the end of the
housing is dirty and can be cut off.
ET: I'm seeing my clients in July for control cables for the A and B rigs including cables and new housing. Under normal NorCal conditions, the cable and housing will last a long time. Depending on the customer's needs and budget, I only change the string in the middle. During last year's storm, I replaced the entire housing and interior of a customer's bike prematurely due to dirt.
